Recently we hosted a tremendous group of young learners from Thailand. They followed a bespoke course which involved English lessons in the morning, fun activities in the afternoon, cultural trips at weekends, not to mention the chance to spend a week at a local high school.
The teenagers came from various different schools in Bangkok and for most this was their first time in the UK. In Thailand, whilst English is part of the curriculum, it is very rarely taught by a native speaker in an English only environment, which is true for many countries. So, our course provided these young learners with a chance of a lifetime.
Once the teenagers got over their first day nerves, it was amazing to see how quickly they adapted to studying and communicating in English with the teachers and their host families. Their course focused on developing their speaking skills; pronunciation, fluency, natural collocations and confidence. A key element of the course was its emphasis on exploring a topic; including its associated vocabulary and grammar, and then creating a piece of work using the new language. The Thai students gave presentations, created advertisements, and even wrote and acted out their own plays.
“Our lessons were so much fun, I really enjoyed being creative!”
“I love my teachers. They look after us and help us…..and I learned so much new vocabulary.”
“I wouldn’t change anything about the course, it is fantastic!”
After finding their feet with us, some of the students then embarked on a full immersion programme at Kings Monkton High School where the students had British buddies to help them navigate lessons. Not only did the Thai students get an insight into British culture, the local students also learnt about Thai culture.
Here are some photos of the juniors’ time in Cardiff. They visited the Principality Stadium, had lessons at Kings Monkton High school, and went on tours to explore London, Bath, Oxford and many more places in the UK.
