British Sandwich Week. Best Sandwich Places in Cardiff

20th May 2018

One of the first things our intern, Mila, learned when she came to the UK is that having lunch here means having a sandwich. In this blog, she writes about some of the best places in Cardiff to buy a sandwich.

Apparently, the sandwich a British creation! It is named after Lord John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. He lived during the 18th century and he loved gambling. He liked it so much, he didn’t want to leave the casino to have a meal, so he asked for some meat between two slices of bread.  Other players began to order ”the same as Sandwich” and soon the meal became more famous than the man.

Every year, the British eat over 3,500,000,000 sandwiches. Therefore, it is not surprising Britain celebrates the Sandwich Week from May 20th to May 26th.

The best way to honour this delicious creation is by going out and trying some of them. Here are some suggestions:

Pettigrew Tea Rooms (Bute Park & Arboretum, Castle Street)

Pettigrew’s is well-known for their afternoon tea, but they have a wonderful selection of cakes (don’t miss the coffee & walnut cake) and tasty sandwiches. Homemade bread and local ingredients are their secret elements. It is not the cheapest place, but it is worth it!

Extra tip: You can become a dough expert yourself if you join one of their Bread Making Courses

New York Deli (20 High Street Arcade)

This American sandwich shop is my personal favourite. It has been in Cardiff for over 26 years and it is famous for its giant hoagies and bagels. The best choice is the hoagie, a long soft bread roll with a very generous filling. They offer everything from light options to some mad alternatives like the White House Special, with 4 different types of meat, cheese and a sauce of your choice.

They are pretty crowded during the lunchtime, but they have a quick, friendly service and for orders above £20 they even deliver your meal to your door.

Cafe Go-Go (8 St Andrews Place)

Just around the school’s corner, Café Go-Go is a very convenient place to have lunch. There is a sitting area with a relaxed atmosphere and a good selection of sandwiches. They prepare them fresh for you with the ingredients you fancy for a fair price. And don’t forget to show your student’s card to get a special offer!

Bomber’s Sandwich House (Guildhall Place, 41 Charles St Cardiff)

Located near the Principality Stadium, Bomber’s offers its sandwiches in three different sizes. They have some exotic recipes and a changing weekly special. Most of the sandwiches include chicken, but occasionally there are some pork, lamb or vegetarian options. The meat is well cooked and the bread is quite soft, but if you don’t fancy a sandwich, you can have your filling in a salad box or a jacket potato.
