It was like a fairytale this week for some of our students here at Celtic English Academy as we visited Castle Coch (The Red Castle) in our minibus. On the approach to Castle Coch on the A470 out of Cardiff you can see the beautiful Castle set amongst the trees on the mountainside above the little town of Tongwynlais and it looks like something from a Walt Disney film.
The castle is a folly built for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, founded on the remains of a 13th century castle. The medieval castle had been neglected for centuries, and was in ruins before it was restored by William Burges. Work started in 1875 and continued for another ten years after Burges’s death in 1881. The incredible architecture and lavish, grand interiors are sure to impress anyone. and our students thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
