English Levels

At Celtic English Academy we really can cater for all learners’ needs. We offer 6 levels of General English and 4 levels of IELTS Exam Preparation. We have a maximum class size of 10 for all our adult courses, which ensures that each student gets the personal attention they need in order to progress.

Course Assessment

Progress through the levels of proficiency is based on assessment results, improvement, class participation, attendance, homework and academic reports. Most students progress by one level each term. Teachers regularly talk to every student about their progress and offer lots of advice on how best to improve your English.

The students’ progress target is one level each term and if you are willing to work hard our teachers will help you to move up to the next class or prepare for a formal qualification. You can use the table above to work out where you currently are and where you want to be. You can also check which IELTS scores and Cambridge qualifications (FCE or CAE) correspond to the Common European Framework Levels.

Placement Test

You are given a placement test on your first day at Celtic. From the results of the placement test, and following a speaking test with a member of the academic team, you will be placed in the most suitable class for your level of English.

Individual Learning Plan

An Individual Learning Plan is set for each student on your first day to determine your aims and your path of study. You are also provided with weekly tests, a monthly report on your progress and assessments of your portfolio work. At the end of the course, you are given a final report and certificate as evidence of your progress and time at Celtic English Academy.

Mid & End-of-Term Tests

All students are required to sit mid and end-of-term tests. The results of these tests help us to decide if you should progress to the next level.

Celtic Online

We now use Celtic Online, which allows you to start studying, making friends and learn more about Celtic before you arrive. Celtic Online provides you with activities to do while studying at the academy and access to further materials for 3 months after your course has finished.
